KLEZMER TUNES
with a classical touch
18 Klezmer tunes for clarinet or violin
and piano
by Daniel Galay
The KLEZMER TUNES are now available
in an arrangement for violin or clarinet solo and string
orchestra.
Daniel Galay, composer, pianist, and
music educator, bridges the worlds of klezmer and classical
music with his KLEZMER TUNES. Both klezmer and classical musicians
will find themselves at home with this music. Parts are provided
for clarinet and violin, but other solo instruments may by substituted
with occasional adjustments in range. The piano may be replaced
by electronic keyboard or accordion, and other instruments may
be added to the ensemble. Be creative! We have provided
chord symbols in the parts for those who prefer to improvise
their own accompaniment. (Note: the chords in the clarinet part
are in concert pitch.) Here are 18 new klezmer tunes that every
musician will enjoy.
This is where middle east meets west - a kind
of Jewish crossover music. Intended for clarinet or violin and
piano (separate parts are supplied for each), these 18 Klezmer
tunes wouild suite almost any melody instrument just as well.
There is a strong encouragement to be creative in performance
right from the start. Chord symbols have been added to the solo
parts and suggestions as to how the originals could be treated
are given in a preface - even to the point of playing in a different
style altogether! - Sheet Music, Spring 2000
The recently-published
arrangement for solo instrument(s) and string orchestra expands
the possibilities of performance. One may play with a string
quartet, quintet, or large string orchestra. In past performance
situations, accordion and percussion have been added, and
on occasion the solo instrument has been cello, or clarinet
and violin together. This arrangement is suitable for a good
high school orchestra as well.
Daniel
Galay’s contribution - bringing klezmer tradition to the classical
concert hall - is bearing fruit. This is a result of his own performances,
the workshops he conducts for students and professional klezmer
players, and the popularization of this artistic genre.
Daniel Galay’s reputation as a composer has been established by
his orchestral and chamber compositions which have been performed
around the world. He has been awarded many prizes and grants,
among them the Sarah Gorby Prize for his many works composed to
Yiddish texts. Mr. Galay is a graduate of the Rubin Academy of
Music in Tel Aviv, and of the University of Chicago where he received
his MA degree in Composition in 1979. He tours frequently, performing
his works as piano soloist and with various chamber ensembles.
Daniel Galay serves as director of the Beit Frankfurt Music Conservatory
in Tel Aviv.
Galay’s love for the klezmer style - Jewish soul music - dates
from his childhood in Argentina. Since the 1970’s he has written
many compositions in this genre, which have been performed in
many countries by well-known musicians such as Haya Livni, Herut
Israeli, Racheli Galay, Chen Tsimbalista, Eldad Shiloach, Valentin
Surif, Dora Gurevitz, Angelica Pardo, and Orit Orbach with the
"Neshot Hava" ensemble. He serves as artistic director of "Chachmei
Safed," an ensemble which performs annually in the Klezmer Festival
in Safed. |
